The city of Miami, located near the southern tip of Florida, is only 200 miles north of the country of Cuba. When Fidel Castro took over as leader of Cuba in 1959 and formed a Communist government, many Cubans opposed him. Some of these people fled from Cuba and headed for Miami. For several years, a steady stream of Cubans flowed into Miami. As a result, Miami is now a city with a very strong Cuban culture.
