The United States is a nation of immigrants. Immigrants are people who come from one country to live in another. Almost everyone in the United States today has ancestors who were immigrants.
Between 1980 and 1990, 8.7 million newcomers arrived in the United States. Experts predict that by the year 2000, one in ten U.S. residents will be an immigrant.
At one time, most U.S. immigrants came from European countries. Today's largest immigrant groups are from Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The single largest group of U.S. immigrants today is made up of people from Mexico. Many immigrant groups settled in certain parts of the country. The map shows examples of where different groups have settled.
Each group of immigrants has its own language, customs, foods, and holidays. This blend of many cultures makes the United States the diverse nation it is today.
