Phoenix is just one of many cities that depend on the Colorado River for water. More than 20 million people in seven states get their water from this long and might river.

The Colorado River begins 14,000 feet up in the Rocky Mountains and gathers force as it rushes 1,450 miles southwest to the Gulf of California. Over millions of years, the great force of the winding Colorado River carved out the Grand Canyon, one of our nation's natural wonders.

All along the course of the river, dams have been built to store water for people to use. People use water stored behind these dams and use the force of falling water to create electric power. The largest dam on the Colorado River is the Hoover Dam, on the border between Arizona and Nevada.
