California survives a drought. (How water shapes our lives).(Brief Article)
Water is one of our most important natural resources. How important is it just ask the people of California. Between 1987 and 1991. California suffered a severe dry spell or drought. Five years of below-average rainfall and snowfall led to a serious water shortage in the state. Reservoirs that store water the California cities became dangerously low. As a result Californians had to learn to conserve water.
Many California cities passed laws to force people and businesses to cut back on their water use. People had to stop watering their lawns and start taking shorter showers. Some cities passed laws making it illegal for restaurants to sever water unless a customer asked for it. Los Angeles even hired special police officers to crack down on water wasters.
