Although the IOC thought Atlanta would be a good place to hold the Olympics, the committee almost voted against Atlanta. Why? Because another U.S. city, Los Angeles, had hosted the Summer Olympics as recently as 1984. The IOG didn't think two Olympics should be held so close together in the same country.
A group of people from Atlanta used a very strong argument to persuade the IOC to choose their city. The group told the IOC that the United States is like many countries joined together. Although Los Angeles and Atlanta are located in the same country, they are in two very different regions. These regions are like separate countries, the group representing Atlanta argued.
