Amtrak is testing a new train that can hit curves at speeds up to 155 miles per hour. The new train, called the X2000, has been nicknamed the "till train" because it tilts when it goes around curves. The ability to tilt around curves allows the train to travel much faster than regular trains, which have to slow down to round curves. The tilt train can make the trip between New York City and Washington, D.C., in less than three hours. A regular train takes four hours.
As the tilt train zips around a curve, the cars do something like the "wave" sports fans do at a game. One by one, each car tilts as it goes around the bend. The each car tilts back to its normal position when it hits the straightaway. A computer measures the curve and tells the train how much to tilt.
If the tilt train becomes widely used, it could change the way people live. For instance, the tilt train may reduce the amount of time needed to travel to and from certain cites. If ...
