Globally, nearly four in 10 pregnancies are unplanned, and about two in 10 end in abortion. Given the many social and personal factors that hinder individuals' effective contraceptive use, and the risk that any contraceptive method may fail, some level of unplanned pregnancy will persist. Consequently, so will the need for abortion. Countries wishing to reduce levels of unplanned pregnancy and abortion and to help women avoid the adverse consequences of unsafe abortion have a number of choices, depending on their particular situation.
