Both in 1960 and in 1984, the median income of black families was approximately 56 percent that of white families. (1) From this fact, one could come to the quick conclusion that black Americans have made little or no economic progress in the past two decades. However, such gross numbers mask a complex phenomenon--the changing structure of black families and their changing economic prospects. The number of black families headed by women has increased, and the shift has hindered the overall economic progress of black Americans.
