Emergency contraception is the use of drugs or devices to prevent pregnancy within a few days after unprotected coitus. A variety of legal and political obstacles may hamper the introduction of emergency contraception into developing countries. Many of these obstacles are rooted in a basic lack of knowledge about the mode of action of emergency methods, the indications for their use and their availability.
