One thing is certain: the musical standards at the Salzburg Festival are stratospheric. How can one argue with Karita Mattila as Jenufa, Bryn Terfel as Falstaff, Natalie Dessay as Zerbinetta, Christine Schafer as Cherubino? And Valery Gergiev regularly imports Russians with unfamiliar names and fabulous voices. Add to this great conductors and tip-top orchestras in the pit, including the Vienna Philharmonic, and you are in heaven. Hell, however, begins with directors and productions.
