Brrr! I never expected to be chilled by a CD of Mahler, even from Kent Nagano, but this recording, a recreation of the 1905 concert at which most of these works had their first performance, is decidedly nippy. The cover photo says it all: the artists stare directly and intensely out of lean and chiseled faces, and in no relation to each other. A lean and chiseled sound with a direct intensity of expression works well for the seven songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn that open the disc. The extroverted and martial ones, especially "Lied des Verfolgten im Turm," "Schildwache Nachtlied" and "Revelge," require forceful vocalism and crisp declamation, and Henschel delivers, with voice to spare. Nagano too paints in bright, bold colors, and the orchestral sound is impressive. The only dud in this group is the fairy tale Landler, "Rheinlegendchen." Everything is earnestly in place, but without rhythmic suppleness and nuance the piece sounds wooden.
