Sony Classical's Mythodea -- Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey was worrisome as soon as it arrived, if only because of the presence of both a dash and a colon in its awkward full title (not to mention the implied second colon between 2001 and Mars that threatens to materialize at any moment). The piece itself is a choral symphony by Vangelis, who is still most famous for his Oscar-winning score to Chariots of Fire. It was written to commemorate NASA's ongoing Odyssey mission to Mars. Parts of the piece are stirring, in a primitive, obvious way; after a space-age, sound-effects-laden introduction, it launches into a propulsive, triplet-driven lift-off march that is equal parts "Mars," Carmina Burana and opening-credits music.
