Barry Millington's Wagner (Princeton, paperback) is a sound, informed starting-point. Ernest Newman's The Wagner Operas (Princeton, paperback) remains the best introduction to the works. In Wagner Remembered (Faber), Stewart Spencer presents a stimulating sequence of personal reminiscences. For the genesis 2 of Meistersinger, John Warrack's Cambridge Opera Handbook (paperback) is worth your time, while the ENO/Royal Opera Guide (Riverrun, paperback) includes a libretto and stimulating essays. Dover's full score and Koenemann's vocal score have only German texts; the Schirmer vocal score includes a translation.
