The season of 1910-11 was the season of Engelbert Humperdinck at the Met. On December 8, 1910, when the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse docked, Metropolitan Opera general manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza was at the pier to greet Humperdinck, arriving in New York for the premiere of his second opera, Konigskinder. The Met went all out to make the German composer's month-long stay special. Among the events planned were a revival of his popular Hansel und Gretel, scheduled for the afternoon of December 26, and a New Year's Day concert in his honor, which would feature several of his compositions. Humperdinck had agreed to oversee rehearsals for both operas, under the baton of Alfred Hertz, a personal favorite of the composer. That Giacomo Puccini was also in town to attend the Met's world premiere of his La Fanciulla del West on December 10 did not go unnoticed by the press and public.
