1. THE METROPOLITAN OPERA gave a special pre-opening-night benefit performance on Saturday, September 22, to "aid the victims, families, rescue workers and relief effort of the World Trade Center tragedy." More than $2.1 million was raised at the performance, which featured staged complete acts from three Verdi operas and a special appearance by New York City Mayor RUDOLPH GIULIANI. Giuliani was also honored by NEW YORK CITY OPERA on October 8, when that company presented a benefit performance of its new production of Der Fliegende Hollander to aid WTC victims. All personnel involved in both performances contributed their time and talents to the relief effort.
2. The winter season at Columbia University's MILLER THEATRE will feature a concert series devoted to music from the Chapel Royal of MARY I OF ENGLAND. Performers scheduled for concerts include the VOX VOCAL ENSEMBLE (January 26, St. Paul's Chapel), POMERIUM (February 16, St. Paul's Chapel) and THE TALLIS SCHOLARS, conducted by PETER PHILLIPS (March 16 at St. Paul's Chapel; March 17 at Riverside Church).
