Because sexual behavior determines exposure to the risk of STDs, men and women of all ages, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and income levels acquire STDs. However, women, teenagers, the poor and minorities, especially blacks, bear the brunt of these infections. Women are more severely affected than men for the reasons noted earlier: They are more susceptible to infection and are less likely to experience symptoms, which makes detection more difficult until serious problems develop.
