TALLAHASSEE, Fla. _ When the Florida State game was first postponed following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Georgia Tech officials pushed to have it re-scheduled for Dec. 9.

They would have been better off trying to get it canceled completely.

Tech's most disappointing season under George O'Leary ended fittingly for the Yellow Jackets, who blew a 3-point halftime lead Saturday with a listless third quarter and fell, 28-17, to the unranked Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Tech (7-5, 4-4 in ACC), ranked in the top 10 when this game was to be played on Sept. 15, closed the regular season by losing three of its last four. The Jackets finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference, their worst showing since 1996, O'Leary's second full season.

"If you told me before the season that we were going to be 7-5, you'd have to fight me in a bar on a Saturday night," defensive end Greg Gathers said. "Things didn't work out like we planned."

Florida State (7-4, 6-2) also didn't have the season it hoped for, snapping its NCAA-record string of 14 straight seasons with 10 or more wins and top-4 finishes. But the Seminoles haven't forgotten how to beat Tech, improving to 10-0 against the Jackets since joining the ACC in 1992.

"This is a game that was supposed to have been, but didn't happen," Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said. "We both had losses. There was no trophy out there. No streaks, no top-four finish. It came down to who wanted it most. We had the benefit of playing in Tallahassee."
