EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ During the past seven years, there has been one figure, above all others, who has been the key in determining which side has had the upper hand in the Patriots-Jets rivalry.
It's not Bill Parcells. And not Bill Belichick, either, at least not on the field.
While the teams have traded coaches, players and front-office officials in creating a terrific rivalry, the winner most often has been the team that has had Curtis Martin carrying the ball.
After the Patriots drafted Martin in 1995, they beat the Jets five straight times before New York finally won in the second meeting in 1997. In 1998, Martin switched sides. And so did the results. Since Martin has been in New York, the Jets have won six of seven, meaning Martin personally is 11-2 in the series.
