PHILADELPHIA _ Despite its lofty national ranking, very little has come easy early on for the men's basketball team at St. Joseph's University. That pattern continued with Saturday night's 82-76 win over gritty Canisius at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
While the 4-1 Hawks are ranked No. 19 in the country by the Associated Press, Canisius (1-2) is not even the best team in its home city, having lost to rival Buffalo in its previous game.
None of that mattered to St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli, who was not concerned that his team did not put away the Golden Griffins until the game's final minute.
