CHAPEL HILL, N.C. _ Four piles of ice were scattered across the Kenan Stadium field, four chilly testimonials to a season that started so bad and ended so good.
Strewn among the ice were chunks of fruit.
Peaches, of course.
The Tar Heels finished off their unlikely in-season turnaround by beating Southern Methodist, 19-10, on Saturday _ then accepted an invitation to the Peach Bowl.
"We knew the stakes," said UNC senior quarterback Ronald Curry, who accounted for 158 yards and a touchdown in his final game at Kenan Stadium. "That's what we played all year for I haven't been to a bowl since my freshman year. Now I get to go out with another one."
As the final minutes unfolded, UNC players sprayed Gatorade bottles like champagne and dumped four buckets of ice water. One hit coach John Bunting, the former UNC linebacker who nearly cried afterward as he described the emotions of leading the Tar Heels (7-5) out of their 0-3 start.
Another hit strength coach Jeff Connors, credited by Bunting for toughening up the Tar Heels. Another hit defensive end Julius Peppers, an NFL-bound junior whose last play in his last game at home was a quarterback sack.
