With six weeks left in this NFL season, the playoff picture remains as murky as ever. No team has come close to clinching a postseason berth, and only two_Detroit and Carolina_have been mathematically eliminated.

Nevertheless, a few teams should feel confident about printing and selling playoff tickets. And a few more might have a reasonable cause to clear their calendars for January. For the rest of them, the scramble is on.

Of the 31 teams in the league, 20 are at least within a game of .500 and five more are not totally out of it at 4-6. This is how we dissect their playoff chances:

1. MORTAL LOCKS: Raiders, Pittsburgh (AFC); St. Louis (NFC).

Comment: The Steelers and Raiders are battling for home-field advantage in the AFC, but Pittsburgh has the upper hand because it will play one more conference game, 13, than the Raiders.
