BLACKSBURG, Va. _ The roses didn't come easily from this hard, hard ground here Saturday, but oh the roses did bloom, didn't they? When the heart-pounding finally eased _ "I never held my breath that long!" exclaimed University of Miami president Donna Shalala _ that was all that mattered.
UM cornerback Mike Rumph waved one of those long-stemmed beauties in the chilly air of emptying Lane Stadium and kicker Todd Sievers held one in his teeth like some dashing, romantic hero. Over on a corner of the field a big circle of Hurricanes speared helmets high and roared a sing-song chant.
"We're going to the `ship!"
"What!?"
"We're going to the `ship!"
To the championship, of course.
