Pat Riley steps into the abyss.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
We once called him a championship coach. So revered was Pat Riley that he authored a book titled "The Winner Within, and a lot of us bought it. Some of us liked it, and many of us believed it, absorbing it as gospel.
But somewhere along the line, after ego and arrogance got the better of him, his failure to win a championship in Miami brought the man back down to earth with the rest of us.
Now, sadly, Mr. GQ himself seems to have stepped into an abyss. Is there another way to describe what has taken place in South Beach? The Heat, a team that paid out $77 million in player salaries last season _ and that has Alonzo Mourning and Eddie Jones on its roster _ are 2-13. They have lost 11 straight. Heading into last night, they had the worst record in the Eastern Conference. They were half a game worse than the Chicago Bulls.
