CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. _ There were a few welts on his baby face and, once again, the left ankle he had injured three weeks ago was throbbing a bit. But the real pain Zack Mills felt was reflected in his eyes, a mixture of disappointment and shock.
Mills, the 19-year-old redshirt freshman quarterback who had almost single-handedly saved Penn State from disaster this season, learned for the first time Saturday that even a rising star gets knocked off course.
"I made some strides this season," he said, "but I looked like a freshman out there today."
Mills and the rest of the Nittany Lions will have plenty of time to wonder what went wrong because the crazy 20-14 loss they were handed by Virginia at Scott Stadium on a gorgeous sunny day ended their season. Penn State (5-6) needed a win to be eligible to play in a bowl game. In fact, Alamo Bowl representatives were here with open arms.
