OXFORD, Miss. _ He's been the guy to carry the running game load and sometimes been the guy who seemed to think the world was loaded on his shoulders.
With apologies to the late, great Jerry Garcia, what a long, strange trip it's been for Ole Miss tailback Joe Gunn.
It may have ended Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, when Gunn went off tackle for a 10-yard scoring run that sealed the deal on the Rebels' 38-27 victory over visiting Vanderbilt at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Gunn was the Rebels' leading rusher in 1999, when he ran for 951 yards and five touchdowns, but was clearly bent out of shape when Ole Miss touted teammate Deuce McAllister for the Heisman Trophy next season.
Deuce knew the value of a smile and a firm handshake. Joe has a tendency to be aloof, distant. But they both had a lot to do with the Rebels' success. That was obvious to everyone.
Then, in September, Gunn and Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe confirmed that Gunn had twice been arrested on drug charges in the last two years, with all parties involved insisting Gunn had paid the price for his indiscretions.
There would be no specifics.
