Center field or center ice?
That was the question John Zimmerman had to answer.
It might not have been an unusual choice in Boston or Detroit. But for an Alabama native growing up in Birmingham, the decision wasn't one every kid faced.
"In the deep South, they're fans of football and NASCAR," said Zimmerman, who trains with pairs partner Kyoko Ina in Hackensack, N.J. "It's very ironic for me to have come out of the South. At 14, I decided on skating over baseball."
Good thing, too.
Zimmerman, 28, and Ina, 29, are enjoying a Grand Prix season strong enough to set them up as medal contenders at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
