KOENIGSWINTER, Germany _ Talks on Afghanistan's political future neared the home stretch Saturday night as the northern alliance, responding to heavy pressure, stopped squabbling and released a list of candidates to serve in an interim government.

The northern alliance apparently gave ground on two major points: the size of a proposed multinational peacekeeping force and the role of pre-Taliban president Burhanuddin Rabbani in an interim government.

Northern alliance foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, speaking to reporters in Kabul, said Rabbani would likely have some role but "not necessarily as president of the Islamic State of Afghanistan." He also ...
