Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to be in Washington on Thursday to speak to Congress about baseball's 79-year-old antitrust exemption and to outline the economic ills that plague the sport.
Selig should do more than just pack his favorite blue suit before he goes to Washington. He should stand up early this week and tell the baseball world that contraction is not going to happen in time for the 2002 season.
Given all the legal battles that must be contested, it's highly doubtful that Selig could pull off his plan to fold two teams _ most likely the Minnesota Twins and the Montreal Expos _ in time for the 2002 season anyway. However, the official word needs to come from Selig's mouth. He can say that the sport plans to contract in time for the 2003 season, but for the sake of baseball, he needs to say the Twins and the Expos are safe for next season.
And he needs to say it this week.
