TOKYO _ Japan's Crown Princess Masako gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Saturday, delivering a needed dose of good cheer to a nation mired in economic gloom but raising questions about whether a female might someday be permitted to ascend the imperial throne.
Fireworks exploded, newspapers rushed "Extra!" editions into print and Japanese exchanged "Banzai!" cheers at news of the long-awaited baby, the first for the Harvard-educated princess, 37, and Crown Prince Naruhito, 41, after more than eight years of marriage.
In an unprecedented sign of the imperial family's gradual and subtle nods to modernity, the prince was at his wife's bedside when their daughter was delivered in the imperial hospital at 2:43 p.m., the court said.
