The Justice Ministry rejected the appeal of nine Afghan men for refugee status because, among other reasons, they repeatedly changed their stories about the persecution they suffered in Afghanistan, an Immigration Bureau official said at a press conference.
It is rare for the Justice Ministry to call a press conference Wednesday to explain the reasons for its actions.
Kazumine Terawaki, head of general affairs at the Immigration Bureau, said the Afghans changed their testimony significantly in consecutive sessions and five of them had entered Japan between three and six times in the past, but had not requested refugee status before.
