Kupang, Nov 28 (ANTARA) - East Timor leader Xanana Gusmao said here Wednesday, if he was elected his country's president, he would consider giving an amnesty to East Timorese refugees who on their return in their homeland were incriminated and tried.

"I will consider it. That is , if I am elected president. Because only a president is authorized to give an amnesty," he said after meeting with East Timorese refugees here.

He made the statement in reply to a request made by one of the refugees that East Timor authorities forgive East Timorese refugees who had committed politically motivated violations of the law when they were still in East Timor.
