2001 DEC 6 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- University of Pittsburgh researchers found 14% of women in a recent study who had suffered miscarriages shared a similar flaw in the X chromosome, university officials said.
Women who had the flaw were more likely to miscarry male fetuses, said Dr. W. Allen Hogge, a professor of obstetrics at the University of Pittsburgh and author of the study. About 50% of male fetuses receive the mother's X chromosome, "causing the fetus to spontaneously abort."
Hogge said there is no known cure for the genetic flaw, but the study could help assess risk of miscarriage in the future. Female fetuses are less likely to be miscarried ...
