2001 DEC 6 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - An antiviral protein coating may allow safe artificial insemination for women in relationships with HIV[superscript]+ men, according to researchers in Minnesota.
Osmond J. D'Cruz and colleagues at the Parker Hughes Institute in St. Paul conducted a study to "determine whether artificial insemination of semen pretreated with pokeweed antiviral protein...has any adverse effects on pregnancy outcome in the rabbit model."
The researchers did not find any deleterious effects from pokeweed protein treatment, according to their report in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
D'Cruz and coworkers compared the pregnancy rates and outcomes of female rabbits inseminated with semen pretreated with 0, 100 or 1000 [micro sign]g/mL of pokeweed antiviral protein. The protein, isolated from the leaves of the pokeweed plant (Phytolacca americana) has been shown to kill HIV and other viruses, they noted.
Even at the highest dose, pokeweed protein treatment had no adverse effect on pregnancy rates. The protein also had no discernible effect on the length of gestation or the chance of successful birth, study data showed.
