NEW BEDFORD, Mass. _ Life took one giant step toward normal as classes resumed at New Bedford High School Monday.
But with nearly half the students absent, police barricades around the school, and special discussion sessions taking up a good part of the morning, it was clear that it will be some time before tests and homework edge out fear and anger in students' minds.
"It's kind of scary because you don't think it could ever happen here," said senior Alicia Pimental, 17, on her way into school. "And then it almost did."
Forty percent of New Bedford High's 3,250 students were absent from school Monday, a figure Superintendent Joseph S. Silva Jr. called "understandable."
