When Toby went to visit his mom in the hospital, he watched the nurse connect a bottle to a tube that went into his mom's ann. "There's morphine in the bottle," the nurse explained. "It will dull the pain from the surgery so your mom will be more comfortable."

The next day, Toby's mom was ready to go home. The nurse gave her codeine for pain.

Both morphine and codeine are in a class of drugs called narcotics. Heroin and opium are narcotics, too. Does this mean that Toby's mom is on her way to becoming a drug addict? No way! Certain narcotics are given to people who are in pain from surgery or illness. If the patient follows the doctor's orders, he or she is not likely to become addicted to the drug.

When a person uses street drugs like heroin, however, it's another story. The user can't know exactly how much of the drug he or she is taking or how strong ...
