Rasheed and Ricky filed into the assembly with the rest of the sixth grade students.
"There's a screen up on stage. Bet we're going to see a movie," Rasheed whispered.
"Yeah, and I bet it'll be on drugs. Look over there." Ricky pointed to a young man who was standing on stage next to a poster that said "Drugs Can Kill."
"Students, may I have your attention, please," Ms. Roberts, the principal, called out. "Today we're going to see a movie about cocaine, a very powerful and dangerous drug. You may have also heard of crack, which is a form of cocaine. After the movie, Al Gomez will speak with us. As you'll find out, Al can tell you a lot about cocaine and what it can do to your body and mind. Please welcome him and feel free to ask any questions."
The movie was about a high school kid named Brian, whose parents were very busy with work. Brian's friends liked hanging out at his house because there were never any parents around. These gatherings often included alcohol, and one time someone brought cocaine. He showed Brian how to "snort" the cocaine up his nose. Brian got high immediately After a while, he became hooked on cocaine and began to steal from his parents to get the money to pay for ft. Finally, he was caught breaking into a house. The movie ended with a shot of Brian standing in a courtroom wearing handcuffs. His parents were both crying.
After the movie, Al Gomez stood up to speak. He looked nervous.
"I'm here to tell you that the story in the movie is true to life-my life," said Al. "I started using cocaine in much the same way that Brian did. A friend brought some to a party and showed me how to use it. The high was powerful. I felt that I could see things more clearly. I had energy. I felt strong and on top of the world. The next time I had the chance to use cocaine, I didn't hesitate. After a few months, I was using it every weekend. My biggest problem was finding money. Cocaine is very expensive, you know. Like Brian, I stole from my parents and even from my grandmother."
