Danny didn't set out to be a hero. He was simply a kid who was very upset over the death of his favorite uncle.
Uncle Rob was a big man with a loud, booming voice and an even louder laugh. It seemed to Danny that he was always playing tricks or telling jokes. Uncle Rob loved sports, and he took Danny to a game almost every weekend. Danny would get a hot dog, Uncle Rob would chew tobacco, and together they would cheer until they were both hoarse.
After Uncle Rob got sick, there were fewer ball games. He was still the best joker in town, but his laugh was quieter now. Once, when Danny visited him in the hospital, he was shocked at how much smaller and thinner Uncle Rob looked. "He's almost like a different person," Danny said to his mom.
Danny learned that the chewing tobacco Uncle Rob used had caused cancer in his mouth. Doctors did surgery on Uncle Rob's tongue and gums, but the cancer came back a few months later. The cancer kept spreading, and after a while, there was nothing more the doctors could do.
At first, Danny just couldn't believe that his big, strong, healthy uncle had died. He felt sad and angry One day, as he was watching a high school football game, he noticed that the kids in front of him had cans of chewing tobacco, or dip, in their back pockets.
