Lisa, Alex, and David have one thing in common. They don't know how to assert themselves. Asserting yourself means telling how you feel. It means being able to stand up for your rights, even though you disagree with a friend and may upset him or her.
There are lots of reasons why people find it hard to be assertive. Lisa says she lets her friends get their own way all the time because she wants them to like her. Besides, she says, she hates getting into arguments. Think about it--would she try drugs or inhalants just to please her friends?
When it comes to resisting drugs, you need to know how to stand up for what you believe and what is best for you. Learning how to walk away from harmful situations is just as important as learning to make friends.
