Overview
The purpose of Get Smart About Drugs, Grades 2-3, is to help children recognize and avoid being drawn into unhealthy situations involving medicines, inhalants, tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. In scenarios involving the misuse of drugs, students learn and practice effective prevention skills including critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, refusal techniques, and assertiveness.
Unit 1: Medicines and Drugs
Students will:
* learn the distinction between appropriate and inappropriate use of medicine;
* understand why they should never take medicines unless they are given by a physician or trusted adult;
* know what inhalants are and their effects on the brain and other parts of their body;
