Ralph's older brother Jeff was on the basketball team at his junior high school. He was one of the best players. Ralph wanted to be just like him when he got older. One day, Jeff didn't go to practice because he felt sick. His head ached and he coughed a lot.
"I think you are getting a cold," his mother said. "You probably shouldn't play basketball today."
But Jeff didn't have a cold. He had spent yesterday afternoon at a friend's house. They had sniffed glue together to see what "getting high" felt like. He remembered feeling dizzy and confused. He couldn't remember too much of what happened except that his friend got a bad nosebleed after sniffing the glue.
"Oh, no," he said out loud. "If I don't go to practice, I am out of the next game."
Later, Jeff's friend called and asked, "When do you want to do it again?"
"Never!" said Jeff. "I feel awful. I feel so bad, I'm not going to basketball practice. I have never missed practice before--ever! There is no way I am going to do that again. I don't want to miss out on basketball or anything else just to sniff something like glue."
