Medicines are drugs that are given to help make you feel better when you get sick. But, like all drugs, they can harm you if you do not take them correctly.
You should take medicines only from a grown-up you know and trust.
Mike felt sick. His head hurt and his throat felt terrible. Mike was worried. Next Saturday was the big soccer game, and he was afraid he would be too sick to play. His mother took him to see Dr. Murphy.
"What's the problem, Mike?" asked Dr. Murphy.
"I don't feel good. My stomach hurts, and so does my head. It hurts here too," said Mike as he pointed to his neck.
Dr. Murphy checked Mike's throat. "Mike, you have an infected throat. I am giving your mother a prescription for a medicine called penicillin (pen-a-SIL-in). It will get rid of the germs that made you sick. But you have to follow my directions. I am writing down how much medicine you need to take each day and when you should take it. You should finish all of the medicine. That means you will have to take it every day for the next 10 days."
