Hundreds of additional slot machines could be up and running at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino by next month now that a new Indian gambling compact has been approved.

Sunland officials had pushed for a change in state law during the last legislative session clearing the way for more slot machines.

But because expansion of gambling at New Mexico's four tracks is indirectly linked to Indian casinos, Sunland had to wait for Wednesday's federal approval of a new state-tribal compact.
