MIAMI _ Virtually overnight _ for better and for worse _ the pressures of war, economics and global markets are reshaping South Florida's cruise ship industry, one of the driving forces of the region's economy.

This week's announced merger between Royal Caribbean and Britain's P&O Princess Cruises _ whose roots date back to 1840, and whose history includes transporting soldiers for the Crimean War _ can be viewed as a win for South Florida.

That's because the main operations will be based in Miami, the current headquarters of Royal Caribbean, which is one of the city's leading civic benefactors.
