As one of the next round of projects it has selected to fund under the auspices of its superconductivity partnership initiative (SPI), the Department of Energy will co-sponsor installation of an HTS power cable in the Long Island, NY, power grid. The cable system will be based on a co-axial (cold dielectric) design and will deliver 77 MW of power over approximately one-half mile in Long Island Power Authority's (LIPA) power transmission grid near East Shore-ham on Long Island.
