An R & D group based at Tokyo's Aoyama Gakuin University and led by Professor Jun Akimitsu, has joined forces with the Materials Engineering Laboratory of the National institute for Materials Science to further develop the superconducting material magnesium diboride, originally discovered by the university team. The magnesium diboride compound has been demonstrated to turn superconductive at a temperature of (minus) -234 degrees C, which is almost twice as high as that recorded to date for any metal superconductor.
The joint work now being pursued, is in the development of a new wire fabrication technique and there is an initial report describing a successful series ...
