National Project- Current and Ongoing
Technological Development of Biological Resources in Bioconsortia New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation / Ajinomoto Inc.
This is an extract from the first interim report of the project.
Microorganisms can prove to be a valuable source of enzymes and genes, thus those yet undiscovered bacteria, which have been impossible to isolate and culture, represent a valued uncultivated source for study, research, and practical use.
The aim of this research project, now under way, is to develop the basic technology that will make it feasible to isolate and culture the many microbes existing in nature, making them available as microbial resources. These have potential use in the production of fermented food products, amino acids, antibiotics, bio-activated materials and enzymes.
The screening of microorganisms living in nature is a key factor in biotechnology research in their development as microbial resources.
Such microorganisms are to be found in soil, freshwater, seawater, activated sludge, the rumina of herbivores and in the intestines of fish.
