Frog Pancreas Developed from Undifferentiated Embryo Cell

A joint R & D group from the Department of Life Sciences, Tokyo University, and the Japan Science and Technology Foundation which is already on record for the successful use of frog cells to create thirteen laboratory organs and tissues, including red blood cells, hearts, kidneys, and eyes, has now grown a frog pancreas from an undifferentiated embryo cell.

As far back as 1989 the leading members of this joint team Asashima Makoto, and Moriya Naomi, had identified an agent, known as activin, which would promote cell differentiation. The organs and tissues were grown by treating undifferentiated frog cells with activin and culturing the cells in a test tube. The undifferentiated cells then developed into recognisable tissue and organs, the choice being made relative to the concentration of activin.

It was also shown that if retinoic acid is used during the activin treatment, the cell divides and differentiates into a kidney.

In the latest test, the undifferentiated frog cell was immersed for one hour in activin solution, then rinsed. After five hours it was immersed for one hour in ...
