Production and Utilisation of Complex Carbohydrates

This is a long running project having several stages starting in 1991, and now in it's evaluation years, 2000 / 2001 / 2002.
Complex carbohydrates, fundamental components of organisms, have vital functions such as substance recognition, which cannot be achieved only by nucleic acids, proteins, or lipids.
Complex carbohydrates adhere to enzymes which immobilise carbon dioxide and stimulate reaction promoting functions, so the applications of these complex carbohydrates has great potential in industrial sectors.
The aim of this project has been to establish technologies to manufacture and utilise these complex carbohydrates.
In Chemical Synthesis Technologies, progress and results have been recorded. A technique has been established to synthesise a variety of oligosaccharide blocks comprising mucin type carbohydrates, and a technology has been developed to synthesise the core trisaccharide necessary for synthesising high mannose type carbohydrate chains or complex carbohydrate chains.
