Noritake Company's group member, Ise Electronics, had scored a considerable impact in the development of the new generation of field-emission displays (FEDs) by prototyping and putting on exhibition, a 4-inch FED in mid 2001, using carbon nanotube emitters, instead of the conventional molybdenum Spindt tips.
The next stage is to produce a carbon nanotube emitters prototype with a 40-inch display, and Noritake expects this to become factual early in 2002.
Field-emission displays are seen as replacing liquid crystal displays and plasma displays as flat panel applications. The FED operates by use of an electron gun shooting electrons at phosphorus that emits light using emitters (mini-electrodes), that drive a large number of pixels.
