If you wonder what is love's perfection, the Holy Father, echoing the Church's teaching and tradition, has the answer. It is mercy.
Recall the parallelism in these two Gospel passages: "Be merciful even as your Father is merciful" (Lk 6,36), and "Be perfect even as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5,48).
One recent Church document makes the following obvious conclusion: God's mercy is God's perfection.
Therefore, if we are to be the true image and likeness of God, and loving children of his, there's no other way but to immerse ourselves in divine mercy and to show that boundless mercy also to others. Our perfection can lie in no other thing. …
